IT Recruitment Market continues to improve

Despite a relatively slow start to 2012, we have noticed that activity in the IT Recruitment market has certainly picked up over the last 2 weeks.

January certainly took a few weeks to get going with the typical “New Year, New Job” approach not materialising as we were expecting but with a good number of vacancies registered towards the end of January it appeared that confidence was returning. All seemed to be picking up nicely only for the snow to have a knock on effect with interviews cancelled and a drop in client vacancies as a result.

Since that though, we’ve had a record couple of weeks with the number of IT Jobs up dramatically and our number of placements also increasing. Certainly the market appears to be relatively buoyant, but it does appear to be a case of things being a little bit volatile.

We’re confident that 2012 will see continued recovery in the marketplace with PHP, .NET and e-Commerce skills continuing to be in high demand.

Best advice for writing an IT CV

As a specialist IT Recruitment Agency, we are often asked advice as to how to write an IT CV.

Below, you can find some of our pointers:

  • CV’s do not need to be just 2 pages; in fact most Technical CV’s will need to be longer (but try and keep it to 4 pages maximum).
  • Write your CV in reverse chronological order (start with today and work backwards).
  • Ensure that the CV is relevant to the position you are applying for.
  • Ensure that the Font Size is readable
    (Arial Size 11 is popular).
  • Keep the format simple, keeping all information relevant.
  • Use a skills matrix to highlight your main technical skills including the number of years you have worked with each technology.
  • Use your personal statement to outline your objectives, technical skills and soft skills.
  • Use spell check and ensure your CV has been proof read.
  • Save the document as Rich Text Format.
  • Highlight areas of responsibility and outline your key achievements.
  • List your exact duties within each position, as the Job Title alone is not enough

Best of luck with your CV writing!

Google+ as a Recruitment tool? – We think so

Google+ as a Recruitment tool?

CV Screen have been doing some analysis on Google+ to see what the likely impact could be in terms of recruitment. The beauty of the site is the circle and how these could be used to target specific clients or specific candidates.

As an example, all the recruiter needs to do is search for PHP developers and then create a circle for these candidates. Over time, you can then send targeted messages to this group / circle of potential vacancies. At this stage there is limited information on Google+ in terms of the profile of each individual but surely over time users will be encouraged to fill out more details (as Facebook have done).

The benefit for the candidate will be that they will potentially be able to have a few recruiters in an IT Recruitment Circle and therefore their employers wouldn’t be able to see that staff are seeking work.

We as an agency have never seen Facebook as a tool for recruitment, whereas Linkedin is obviously one great big CV database for recruiters – our thought is that Google+ could enable users to make the crossover between the work social network and the home social network in one hit.

Slight slowdown in IT Recruitment over last 2 weeks

So the IT Recruitment market appears to be having a momentary slow down over the last 10 days – nothing to be too concerned about but certainly fewer vacancies than the rest of January.

There are certainly occasions when you can be scratching your head wondering why and then the next day 10 vacancies come in…..

We’ve also looked at adding a few more methods on the social networks for candidates / clients to keep track of us and one such method is a new page on the About.Me site – for more information, please click the following link:  http://about.me/ITRecruitmentAgency

Graduate IT Salaries fall by 3.4% reports CV Screen

Graduate IT salaries have fallen by 3.4% reports CV Screen, with the average salary for a technology graduate now standing at £23,197.

The specialist IT Recruitment Agency monitored over 600 advertised positions for IT graduates and compared it to their findings from January 2011.

Matthew Iveson, Director of CV Screen commented “2011 was a tough year for graduates looking to break in to industry and this has been reflected by the fall in salaries on offer.”

A recent study by the Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR) which predicts that Graduate Salaries will rise in 2012 was refuted by Iveson “We have seen an increase in demand from employers recruiting IT graduates over the last 6 months, but there are still on average over 80 applicants per vacancy. It is unlikely that the increase in demand will be significant enough to put upward pressure on starting salaries in the next 12 months. What we are seeing is that there are some talented 2010 and 2011 graduates still looking for work who are flexible in terms of salaries that they would accept to break in to industry.”

The recruiter continued “Although the market has been relatively stagnant for the last three years, there are areas where demand is still relatively high and salaries for Graduates with Microsoft .NET and Java development skills will certainly rise as there is a shortage of candidates with these skills.”

When asked about what employers are looking for from IT graduates Iveson continued,” We frequently receive vacancies from employers who are looking for candidates who have undertaken a year in industry as part of their course or candidates who have undertaken an internship following graduation. Many employers feel that this will enable them to target suitable candidates who will be able to hit the ground running.”

Iveson added “With UCAS showing a drop of 8.7% in the number of University applications, the worrying thing for the IT industry is that we will see a significant skills shortage in the next 5 years as the IT Jobs market recovers.”

CV Screen recruit at all levels from graduate to IT Director level and when quizzed on the jobs market as a whole Iveson added “We have seen the demand for experienced IT professionals increase throughout 2011 which has been very encouraging. We expect that demand for IT graduates and more senior technology professionals in 2012 will continue to rise, but there will be little impact on salaries in what is still a recovering marketplace.”
